Falcons vs Ponteland Pythons in NRU Cup Final
By Malcolm Stokoe
So near yet so far!
On a clear, sunny but cool day, the Falcons took the pitch at Blyth, where they were playing Ponteland Pythons in the Cup Final. It always promised to be a close game and so it turned out. Early pressure saw the Falcons put the first points on the board, when wing, Jack Vening, sped over after being put clear by scrum-half, Owen Ramsey
. The try was converted by centre, Jack Redfern, to leave the Falcons 7-0 up. Play then eventually moved to the other end of the field and resulted in Ponteland scoring a try by the post, but the conversion was missed. 7-5 up. Again play shifted back towards the Ponteland line before some strong forward drives saw Owen Ramsey
driven over the try line. The conversion was missed. 12-5 up. On the stroke of half-time Ponteland responded with a try of their own, again by the post, but again with the conversion missed - the break saw the score remain 12-10 to GRFC. The second-half was to see the bigger Ponteland forwards start to come more into the game. Some stout defending by Gosforth kept them out until the inevitable happened and Pont scored again by the posts. The conversion was again missed. 10-15 down. The Pont goalkicker did, however, find his range to slot over an slightly more difficult penalty. Down 12-18. As the half wore on the Falcons again showed some flowing moves in the backs, which resulted in full-back, Jack Levinson
, speeding over, having supported well from the back. Still down 17-18 with the kick to come. Unfortunately this drifted wide of the post to leave the score unchanged. There was still time for another very late handling movement seeing Jack Levinson
again with a lengthy run towards the line, only to see him hauled down agonisingly close. The ref, Ian Hardcastle, who had a sound game, awarded a penalty to Ponteland, who put the ball into touch to clinch the game. A worthy effort by our lads, but the final prize and medals were for the runners-up!!
