League leaders are just too strong.

WBR rack up late points.

After a six week break away from Broadway West we welcomed League leaders, Whitley Bay Rockcliff, on a breezy, chilly afternoon. We also welcomed some past players from our GFC, Newcastle Gosforth and Gosforth RFC days ( some of them actually got to see some of the game - but more of the bar!!).
Kicking into the breeze, WBR started the game and were soon on the attack, only to be repelled initially by a resolute home defence. However, after only four minutes the visitors were to score their first unconverted try through their player-coach and ex International, Craig Hamilton. This seemed to spur Gosforth on and on ten minutes our scrum-half, Tom Jones, was to sprint over from some 40 metres to score under the posts for the reliable, Mark Anderson, to convert. Gos were in a 7-5 lead! This was maintained until the 15th minute, when a penalty close in was converted by WBR's fullback, Ryan Rapallo. The score stayed at 7-8 until the 32nd minute, when WBR crossed for a second converted try to take a 7-15 lead { apologies from now on as I was unable to make out the numbers on their shirts!}. Right on half-time the visitors were to score a third converted try to give the score a rather unrealistic score at 7-22.
It was now Gosforth's turn to face the breeze, facing an almighty hill to climb. That they held out until the 61st minute does them credit, from then it was very much one-way traffic as some crucial injuries, tiring bodies and dis-spirited players were very much put to the sword. Firstly an attempted clearance kick was suspiciously charged down for WBR to cross. Then a scrum strike against the head resulted in a fifth try - both were not converted leaving the score on 67 minutes at 7-32. There was no coming back for GRFC and the final ten minutes saw four more WBR tries (three converted) leaving the final score at 7-58. Quite a chastening afternoon for us , but one of celebration for WBR, who, by scoring this bonus-point win, clinched promotion into D&N1 next season. Congrats to them for an excellent season.
Next Saturday sees us back at Broadway for a 3pm KO against an improving Redcar. Let's hope for a return to winning ways!!
