Gosforth kicked off and Mark Anderson
’s neat kick took one bounce and made touch in the home 22 with no one looking interested in catching it. The Rockcliff pack made up for this error by winning the ball on the Gosforth throw, setting up a maul and taking play back to halfway. In the early stages the home side dominated possession but Gosforth defended well until they conceded a penalty after 7 minutes from which WBR took a 3-0 lead. Within 2 minutes, Gosforth hit back. Anderson caught a clearance by the home side, linked with his skipper, Ollie Stephenson, who shrugged off 3 tackles and dummied past another defender before releasing Kieron Locke
who scored near the posts with 3 would be tacklers hanging on to him. Anderson’s conversion took the score to 3-7.
5 minutes later the home side were adjudged offside as Adam Barrass
picked up from a scrum and set off on a typical bullocking run. Anderson kicked the penalty and Gosforth led 10-3. Rockcliff’s ascendancy was at the line out and their first try came just after the half hour with a maul from a line out 5 metres from Gosforth’s goal line. The conversion was missed so Gosforth still led. Injuries to David Robinson
and Adam Barrass
saw them replaced by Andy Camplejohn and Chris Morris then right on half time, Rockcliff regained the lead with another rolling maul and to compound matters, Darren Kelly
received a yellow card. 15-10 at half time
Rockcliff started the second half as they finished the first – on the attack. Gosforth held them out but were reduced to 13 men with Jack Davies
joining Kelly in the sin bin. A third rolling maul brought the home side a third try and increased their lead to 20-10.
Back to their full complement of players, Gosforth attacked at every opportunity. A period of pressure resulted in a try for Darren Kelly
; Anderson was unable to add the extras but they were back in the game at 20-15. There were one or two injury stoppages but both defences were on top despite the attacking intentions of both sides
With 5 minutes to go, the referee seemed to miss a knock on at the base of the scrum by the Rockcliff scrum half and as play continued Gosforth were penalised in their 22. The successful kick at goal stretched the score to 23-15. 6 Minutes of injury time was played, most of which saw Gosforth laying siege to the Rockcliff line but the defence held and although Stephenson and Locke went close there was no more scoring.
